The Things We Left Behind is a new site-specific work in development.
In 1939, my grandfather (farthest on the right) was asked by a German soldier in his barbershop in Lublin, Poland if he was a Jew. He said no. The soldier replied that was for the best because they were going to kill all the Jews. My grandfather and grandmother then fled their home with only a suitcase.
My grandmother recently died at 101. She once told me a story about the clothes she remembers leaving behind in her closet.
This performance piece will take place on the streets of Lublin with a recreation of those garments and the participation of people who are living there now.
